Oktoberfest:

The world's largest fair held annually since 1810 in Munich, Bavaria, Germany.

Yes, we were there and it was amazing!
Enjoy the pictures!

This is the entrance into the festival although there is quite a lot of things going on around the festival too. It is free to get in and the prices for everything else is pretty typical of a fair.

Like most festivals there is food, rides, games, and BEER

Here are some of the beer "gartens"
Very elaborate and huge!
We got to the festival around 10:00am and the lines to get a table in the beer gardens were already and hour wait.

Some of the food places were as cool as the beer gardens

Not only were their booths over the top, so was some of the food!

If you wanted a beer you had to go inside a beer garden but if you wanted vine or hard liquor that was available outside.

This carousel was a bar that spun

This picture is the boys with the friends we went with. We stopped for some "bubbly"

This is inside the beer garden where we ate and enjoyed some beer.

My first authentic Oktoberfest beer!

Yes, I finished it.

No, they did not help me, they had their own. Just joking, while kids are allowed to drink with their parents in Germany, I prefer to wait a while before I let them. Anyone notice Jason is two fisted? Josef wouldn't even touch the glass.

Disclaimer: the children did not drink any beer, nor were they encouraged to.

The boys embracing their German heritage!

 Again, no children drank beer!

The rides were pretty elaborate as well.

The boys and I went on the big slide together.

Their Top Spin is a little more fun then ours. Notice the topless lady in the back. This top spin had a water fountain in front of it and it actually hung the riders upside down with their faces almost in the water, they were able to splash each other as they hung upside down.

A few things a little different from what we are used to at a fair:
You have to pay to use the lavatories (WC), which is typical around Germany, not just at festivals
Everything you drink or eat is in a real glass or mug and on a real plate with real silverware.  Even at walk up and order stands. If you wanted a coffee you'd get it in a ceramic mug. They charge you a deposit of 1-2 euros that you get back when you return the dishes.
They also charge the same deposit on bottled pop.
They had very little security except in the beer gartens and we did not see any altercations or issues all day.
They did not have garbage cans anywhere yet there was very little trash on the ground.

Some of the foods we enjoyed:
Pretzels
Crepes with Nutella, Cinnamon sugar, and lemon sugar
Half chickens
French Fries
Chocolate covered fruit
Wine and beer

We saw lots of Lederhosen and dirndls
Fun was had by all of us!

Mittwoch

A pretty normal week so far! The boys are now driving to the High School with me in the morning and then a bus picks them up to go to their school. In the afternoon they take a bus from their school to the HS. So convenient!

I was able to check out some of the local stores off base today. I learned that very few stores in Germany except credit cards. You must have Euros. Which is gonna take some getting used to. On base I can use credit or American money. I think I'm gonna need a bigger wallet. In Germany you can buy liquor, wine and beer at Aldi and other grocery stores.

We had a very nice dinner with some of our new friends today after our shopping trip and I enjoyed a delicious $3 bottle of wine and it wasn't Boones Farm. Somethings are so much more expensive then the states and other things are so cheap compared to the states.

Below is a picture  I took inside my friend's house. Some of you will notice something that looks familiar.

Sunday Funday...

We have been in Germany for exactly 1 week. Josef still doesn't feel like he is in Germany and Jason has asked on more then one occasion if we could live here forever. I'm just glad that they are adjusting so well!

German refrigerators are really small, similar to a dorm size frig. They buy most things fresh for the day. They are not big on processed or frozen foods. Most bigger villages have bakeries, butchers, and fresh produce markets. A small village is equivalent to a small neighborhood, maybe 30 houses or so. A larger village is equivalent to a larger neighborhood with maybe 60 houses and then a baker, butcher, and produce stand or market. Small cities are a large neighborhood with a gas station and a grocery store or two, and maybe a small business or two but everything is very close together and then outside  the village is farm land until you get to another village. Everything is closed on Sundays except on base. Most larger villages also have a small church. The churches are very old and most have the "onion" style tops/roofs. I'll have to get a picture of one, they are pretty cool.

It's a beautiful fall day in Hohenfels, Germany!

Our first Saturday in Germany...

For those of you who would like to be able to text us while we are in Germany check out "whats app". I've already down loaded it on my phone just waiting for someone else  to down load it so I can try it out. It's free and  only works with smartphones.

We did a bit of cruising around Germany today with another teacher and his wife. We had a wonderful time and had a chance to take a few pictures.
This picture is from a village close to the one we will be living in

This is an entry into an old village that is surrounded by walls

There are paths for walking and biking connecting most of the little villages together, most have benches along the paths

This is a village that is nicknamed Little Switzerland

The pictures  below are for the Dunlaps, anyone recognize these...

5th day...

The work week is over and we are very excited about being able to sleep in, especially the boys. We went to the High School football game tonight and had a great time. The boys ran all around with the other kids and really enjoyed themselves while I chatted with some moms and got the heads up on some of the fun family things to do around here. Looking forward to some free time this weekend!

Day vier (four)...

Got my German driving licence today and drove for my first time in Germany! Boys had another successful day at school! The base is having a bazaar starting today going thru Saturday so we are going to do some walking around today to check things out. We've had so many people helping us out and helping us get settled. Everyone is so friendly!

3rd Full Day in Germany...

2nd day of school for the boys was a success although we heard a rumour that Josef's teacher gives a ton of homework, but I think Josef can handle it! After looking at 4 houses yesterday I ending up picking the first one we saw and was able to get that all set up today, we move in Nov 1st. It's has 4 bedrooms and 2.5 baths so we have plenty of space for visitors!

Wish me luck on my written driving test tomorrow, it's 100 questions and I have  to be able to understand some German words and most of the German signs which are much different then in America.

Day One...

Registered the boys for school (they will start tomorrow), toured my new school (it's only 10 years old), saw my new classroom (looks perfect and my first period class has 5 students), opened a banking account (got my first euros), got a new cell plan (and a european compatible phone), and set up an appointment to see some houses tomorrow afternoon. Now I have to study for my German driver license test!

We are in Germany!

The scenery from the airport to our new town was beautiful! The style of architecture is so cool. Can't wait to go house/apt hunting. The boys got to see their new school, it is walking distance from our hotel. Have a lot to do in the morning but hoping to have some time to go exploring!
